A Lifeline Not Made in the U.S.A.

The New York Times (10/18/09)
In an article in The New York Times (10/18/09), Micheline Maynard explores the economic impact of foreign companies operating in the United States. Millions of Americans work for these companies, and the author tells some of their stories. The article is adapted from Maynard’s book, “The Selling of the American Economy: How Foreign Companies Are Remaking the American Dream,” which explores the impact of foreign investment on American workers, communities, and the political scene. With many U.S. companies closing plants, cutting salaries, and laying off workers, these foreign companies have become a lifeline for many Americans. Further, it is believed that foreign employers could help revive the economy as the United States recovers from the recession.
